Quentin

The first few paragraphs of this chapter reveal a lot about Quentin and who he really is as a character. The opening scene in which he reminisces on falsely confessing to incest and how he is called gay but doesn't really mind says a lot about him as a character. It almost seems as though Quentin is the one to be tasked with finding out why the family is failing and must do something about it, as this will be his importance to the family. And the person who he is most concerned with is Caddy, as he finds hope and inspiration in her, an area where both his mother and father failed to do to him. And at this point, his thoughts reside within the confines of his college year.

  1. Do you think that Quentin struggles with fitting in in his own mind, or that all that has happened to him is simply circumstance?

  2. I think that his being called gay does say a lot about him, and about how be can block out what people are saying about him, and that only few people's opinions matter to him, such as Caddy's or some members of his family at times, but especially Caddy. I also think that he has some jealousy towards Benjy because of all the attention that Caddy gives Benjy. He is at school but his mind is on Caddy and her marriage and their time together.

  4. I think you are right about the first few pages revealing a lot about Quentin's character. A little more expansion on your views of his character would help round out your vision of him. Also try to support your answers with quotes if possible.

  5. I think you could explained more on why Quentin feelings this need, almost anxiety that he feelings coming from his family. I like how you said Quentin is most concerned with caddy because he's parents failed him and that's why.

  6. I don't think that Quentin finds any sort of hope or inspiration in Caddy. I think that he sees a female that needs to be protected and saved because based on his views she is incapable of dong that for herself. He doesn't feel any kind of hope from her but instead just sees something that needs protecting.
